Bogotá on verge of hospital collapse with ICUs at 96%

Bogotá Mayor Claudia López introduced new coronavirus health measures on Monday as ICU occupancy reached 96%, and highest number since the outbreak of the pandemic in March, 2020.
During a press conference accompanied by the Minister of Health Fernando Ruíz and the district’s Health Secretariat Alejandro Gómez, Mayor López warned that the city’s health system could collapse as a result of the third wave of infections lasting an additional two weeks. López also sent a message to youngsters participating in protests stating: “I don’t want to stigmatize young people or people for their legitimate protests, but brooding on anger is useless.” ....

Colombia's May 7 protests begin with downing of Bogotá landmark (timeline)

Early on Friday morning members of the Misak indigenous community from the department of Cauca in southwest Colombia toppled the statue of Bogotá’s founder, Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada (1509 – 1579) in the historic center of the capital. Jiménez de Quesada is the second conquistador to fall flat on this face during 10 days of the national strike.
The Misak leveled a statue of conquistador Sebastián de Belalcázar in the city Cali during the first day of the Paro Nacional. Belalcázar founded Cali and Popayán as he marched south to conquer the northernmost city of the Inca Empire, today’s Quito, capital of Ecuador. Jiménez de Quesada founded Bogotá as a colonial outpost on August 6, 1538. ....

Colombia nears 1 M vaccines for healthcare workers and elderly

Colombia is close to having administered 1 million coronavirus vaccines since the start of the mass vaccination campaign on February 17. With the first million of 65 million required to innoculate 70% of the population in 2021, the Ministry of Health enters Phase II at the end of the month with vaccines for persons under the age of 80.
The country is currently in Phase I for all those age 80 and older. In order to speed up the vaccination process, the country’s Health Minister Fernando Ruíz announced that as of Tuesday seniors residing in Bogotá will be able to visit the nearest vaccination center and get their first dose based on the final digit of their identity card – cédula. ....
