Teen parties keep Swampscott High students remote

Swampscott High School students were set to return to class Monday, but dozens of local teenagers who attended a pair of New Year s Evee parties will keep them remote.
High school students will remain in remote-learning mode until Tuesday, Jan. 19; they have not been in class since Dec. 11.
“We have an obligation to keep students and staff safe and without being able to identify or contact trace partygoers we have no way of minimizing potential spread,” the high school s principal, Dennis Kohut, told the Swampscott Reporter.
“I was informed by an SHS community member that approximately 50 SHS students attended two New Year s Eve parties,” Kohut wrote in an email to families. “The community member noted that the students who attended the parties were not masked or socially distanced.” ....

New rules banning dogs from town-owned property, including parks and school fields, are taking effect. Violators will face hefty fines.
“There are people who think the fields are their personal dog parks,” said Swampscott Board of Health Chair Marianne Hartmann. “People who work at the schools see this happening and with kids using the fields more now for outdoor mask breaks and class time, you would hope that people would be more responsible, but it’s just not happening.”
Town Meeting voted in 2019 to ask the Board of Health to develop language for new regulations banning dogs from town-owned parks and playing fields. The BOH approved the language in October. Signs at the impacted parks and fields are going up now. ....
