The European Space Agency (ESA) has signed a contract with OHB Sweden to be the prime contractor for the development of its Arctic Weather Satellite (AWS) Programme.
The contract, with a total value of €32.5m euros, includes the development of the satellite (including its instrument), the development of the ground segment and also the preparation activities for a possible AWS constellation.
The AWS consists of a single satellite, which is the prototype for a possible future constellation of AWS satellites. It will be equipped with a payload specifically designed to provide global measurements of the atmosphere to enhance weather predictions (in particular over the Arctic). ....

European Space Agency (ESA) will pay
OHB Sweden more than 32 million euros ($38 million) to build a prototype satellite that could end up evolving into a larger weather satellite constellation.
Under the terms of the contract announced Tuesday, OHB will lead an industrial consortium that will produce a polar-orbiting spacecraft that can provide high-resolution humidity and temperature soundings of the atmosphere for ESA’s Arctic Weather Satellite mission. The consortium includes
Omnisys Sweden, which will build the system’s microwave radiometer, and

The European Space Agency (ESA) has signed a contract worth €32 million with OHB Sweden to build a prototype satellite for the Arctic Weather Satellite mission. The development comes in the wake of the heightened need for frequent satellite data for faster weather forecasting updates in the Arctic. This prototype is an indication to a potential constellation of satellites that would supply an almost constant stream of temperature and humidity data from every location on Earth. This would, for the first time, allow very short-range weather forecasting, also termed “nowcasting”, in the Arctic. Meteorologists will also use the mission to improve weather forecasts around the world. ....
