Your organic waste will be upcycled to fertilise fields
Researchers behind a major EU project will develop technologies that make it easier to convert organic waste in our compostable trash bags into fertiliser. UCPH researcher says that agriculture sector needs to tackle climate concerns with sustainable solutions.
According to an array of international researchers involved in a new EU project, the time has come to innovate more sustainable crop fertilisation solutions. Why not use what we have at our fingertips, or more specifically, under the kitchen sink- organic waste.
“European cities produce more than 100 million tonnes of organic waste annually. However, the vast majority of countries manage their waste poorly or inefficiently. This leads to greenhouse gas and ammonia emissions that damage our climate and health, among other things. It would be brilliant if we could develop improved and more efficient ways to upcycle waste, into fertiliser for e ....

David Granatstein says a couple of recent studies are paying off …
GRANATSTEIN … “Yes. I would say for sure! For example, we’ve seen a lot more acres using something like strip-till, which is a form of this high-residue farming. Certain crops are very amenable to that and not only does it protect the soil and improve the soil, but it can reduce costs because you have way fewer trips over the field, you can have less disease problems potentially, you can conserve water. So, there are a number of ripple effects that people do see. They may start it for one reason and they start to see some other benefits that even make it more compelling to use.” ....

India's Vasudha Swaraj boosts organic cotton farming | Apparel Industry News

The intent behind ROC cultivation is to emphasise farming practices that restore and build soil, and render fair conditions for farmers
India s Vasudha Swaraj, the agricultural arm of Pratibha Syntex Ltd, a vertically integrated, sustainability-oriented manufacturer of knitted textiles and garments, has engaged 1,000 farmers in the cultivation of regenerative organic cotton.
The intent behind regenerative organic cotton (ROC) cultivation is to emphasise farming practices that restore and build soil, ensure animal welfare, and render fair conditions for farmers and farmworkers.
In a bid to increase farmer income and improvise soil health, Vasudha Swaraj promoted multi-cropping techniques. With multi-cropping and inter-cropping, while farmers receive additional crop and additional income from the same farmland, the carbon nutrient in the soil is also increased resulting in increasing arability of the farms lands, the company explains. Farmers were also given training on ....
