ICSA hits out at exclusion of organic farmers from REAP

The exclusion of organic farmers from the Results-Based Environmental Agri-Pilot (REAP) has been criticised as a “step in the wrong direction” by the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers Association (ICSA).
Farmers in existing agri-environmental schemes including GLAS, the Organic Scheme and other locally-led schemes will not be permitted to join REAP.
ICSA organics chair Fergal Byrne said: “We cannot continue to send out a message that those doing most for the environment will be at a disadvantage when it comes to allocating environmental supports.
“This is something that will absolutely have to be addressed in the design of the flagship agri-environment scheme in the new CAP. ....

Ryan says organics the future for beef and sheep farmers despite new scheme discriminating against them

Organic farming is the future for Irish agriculture, especially for beef and lamb, according to Minister for Climate Action and Green Party leader Eamon Ryan.
Minister Ryan told the Dail last week that organics offers the prospect of farmers reducing their input costs and increasing the price that they get on the market.
Our food strategy is coming close to fruition now. I believe that it is in the interest of farmers to go in this green way because it is the best way of guaranteeing a price, he said hailing the re-opening of the Organic Farming Scheme.
However, Mr Ryan s comments come despite the newly re-opened organic farming scheme discriminating against beef and lamb producers on the basis of market demand. ....

ICSA hits out at Green leader's remarks on organics

The ICSA has hit out at remarks made by Green Party leader Minister Eamon Ryan.
ICSA president Dermot Kelleher said the minister had suggested that the Organics Scheme was a solution to current difficulties in the beef sector.
Kelleher pointed out how farcical this was given the recently reopened scheme was actually targeted away from beef farmers, towards tillage, horticulture and dairy.
“To claim that a scheme - which explicitly targets tillage, horticulture and dairy farmers to the detriment of beef farmers - is a panacea for the beef sector is patronising in the extreme,” he said.

Fertiliser price hike to have dire impact on farm incomes - ICSA

The speed at which the price of fertiliser has increased over recent weeks is staggering and will have dire consequences for farm incomes, Irish Cattle & Sheep Farmers Association (ICSA) tillage chair Gavin Carberry has said.
“In the space of six weeks, we have witnessed price hikes of almost 50%.
“Nitrogen, which was trading at €180/t, has now skyrocketed to €300, and urea is a whopping €400. That sort of a burden is just too great to bear.
“Fertiliser companies are blaming various global issues for these price increases, but what good is that to farmers who cannot increase their own prices to absorb any extra costs?” ....
