Australia to 'recklessly' invest A$600m in gas project - News

Article by Amanda Jasi
AS PART of its 2021–22 Budget, the Australian Government is investing up to A$600m (US$464.3m) to allow energy generation company Snowy Hydro to construct a 660 MW gas power turbine in Kurri Kurri, Hunter Valley, New South Wales (NSW).
Though the Government has touted benefits such as job creation, reducing energy prices, and emissions reductions, opposition has cast doubt on the purported economic benefits, and has commented on the lack of need for additional gas power and its detriments to a lower-carbon future.
The planned gas power plant would help Australia to deliver its target of 1,000 MW of new dispatchable energy set in September, created in response to the coming closure of the 2,000 MW Liddell power station in 2023. Together, energy company EnergyAustralia’s 316 MW Tallawarra B open cycle gas plant and the Kurri Kurri plant are expected to shore up affordability, security, and reliability of electricity. Tallawarra B is expected by ....

Mushrooming rooftop solar and mild summer weather have driven demand for power from the grid to the lowest for 19 years for the peak summer quarter, cutting wholesale prices by up to 68 per cent and pushing major coal and gas power generators such as AGL Energy to the brink.
NSW, Victoria and South Australia all had record low demand for power from the centralised grid for the three months of the year when consumption is typically highest and prices the most volatile.
The installation of rooftop solar panels hit a fresh high for a March quarter of about 800 megawatts. ....

"Tidal wave" of new wind and solar will force early coal plant closures

24 February 2021
Many of Australia’s coal-fired generators are facing unplanned and early retirements as revenues fall to unsustainable levels, according to a new analysis that finds a surge in wind and solar investment is pushing coal out of the electricity market.
The findings have been detailed in a joint analysis completed by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) and Green Energy Markets, which found that revenues for coal-fired generators could fall by as much as two-thirds by 2025.
The analysis found that the amount of new wind and solar investment entering the Australian energy market could exceed many recent projections, and a lack of flexibility on the part of ageing coal generators could see them retired sooner than anticipated. ....
