Coimbatore: A forest department driver was injured after a wild elephant attacked him near Vaidehi falls checkpost on Monday night. He suffered severe injuries on both his legs and was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital. The driver, Vijayakumar, 54, of Vadivelampalayam near Alandurai, was working on contract basis with the eco-tourism centre at Kovai Courtallam. He was attached to the Boluvampatti forest range. Forest department officials said Vijayakumar took leave from work on Monday. However, he had gone to the checkpost located on the way to Vaidehi waterfalls near Narasipuram. Around 9.30pm, the frontline staff of the forest department were chasing a male elephant from human habitations to the reserve forest area.
Coimbatore: Domestic breeding checkers with Alandurai town panchayat said six of them were terminated from work without prior notice on Saturday, citing their educational qualification. The panchayath had 10 domestic breeding checkers. Seeking anonymity, one of the workers said she was working with the panchayat on a contract basis for the past seven years for a daily wage of Rs230. “Earlier, our work involved dengue control activities. But after the breakout of Covid-19 pandemic, we have been doing door-to-door survey. Apart from collecting basic details, we also check the oxygen level and other visible Covid symptoms of people. We help the families in containment zones as well by running errands for them,” she said.

Coimbatore: Tomato farmers in the district have stopped harvesting the crop and feeding it to cattle as price has dropped to Rs 5 for a kilogram from Rs 25 a month ago Tomatoes are cultivated in about 5,000 hectares in areas like Thondamuthur, Narasipuram, Thenkarai, Nachipalayam and Theethipatti here. Price has touched a three-year low, said A Jagannathan, an Alandurai-based farmer. “Last year, we sold 12kg (a box) for Rs 300 to Rs 400. Now, we are selling the same quantity for Rs 70 to Rs 80,” he told TOI. “Farmers in the region had spent over Rs 1 lakh for cultivating tomatoes in an acre. They will have to spend a few thousand more to harvest and transport tomatoes to commission mandis. We have to pay a farmhand Rs 800 a day to harvest 12kg tomatoes. We also need to spend at least Rs 25 for transporting a box. As farmhands from nearby districts including Salem are yet to reach the district, we are witnessing labour shortage. Wages have gone up,” Jagannathan said.
