‘I Feel Better, But I Don’t Feel Good’ is the second album from Naarm-based Wergaia / Wemba Wemba songwriter and artist, Alice Skye. It follows her 2018 debut Friends With Feelings , and sees Skye working with an expanded team of collaborators, including Jen Cloher and friends Sam and Kane King.
The record is filled with tender guitar-led gems and soaring rock ballads. Moments of introspection are matched by catharis, as on single Party Tricks , where Alice Skye confronts self-defeating cycles of behaviour.
Elsewhere lyrics explore the turbulence of our thoughts, alongside the challenges and consolations of friendship. Skye s insightful writing is moving, and humourous. Homesickness talks of complicated relationships with home, and Browser History reflects on what we reveal of ourselves in online searches.
Mirror II is the third album from The Goon Sax, a Brisbane band formed in high school by close friends Riley Jones, Louis Forster, and James Harrison. Earlier records played across an impressive spectrum of guitar pop and rock, with lyrics that reflected on the last years of their teens, navigating school, life and touring demands amidst challenges of growing up. Mirror II is described as a fresh beginning for the band, a chance for reinvention and extention. The band s instincts for pure pop expression are strong as ever in the melodies, hooks and verses, while new layers of sound and experimentation are drawn into The Goon Sax universe.
‘Mood Valiant’ is the third album from Hiatus Kaiyote. It’s the follow up to their critically acclaimed 2015 album, Choose Your Weapon . As always, their songs shine light on a range of musical traditions. Mood Valiant crosses cinematic jazz, hip hop, funk, and soul, reflecting the vitality, originality, and prodigious skill the group is famed for.
First single Get Sun radiates all the warmth of its titular star, with soaring strings, woodwind, brass and bossa-nova rhythms. It also features the talents of legendary Brazilian composer and arranger Arthur Verocai, whom the group met during a 2019 trip to Rio de Janeiro. ‘Red Room’ and ‘Stone Or Lavender’, also conceived in Verocai s studio, showcase a masterful blend of downtempo grooves, and R&B ballardry.
