More than 21,000 campsites were snapped up Thursday as Alberta Parks began accepting bookings for the coming season, more than double the number of reservations compared to opening day last year.

The province began accepting campsite reservations on Thursday and like many camping trips, it didn t go as smoothly as hoped. 
On the opening morning, the province s booking site was as sluggish as a 1975 Winnebago navigating the Highwood Pass.
In an email to CBC News, Alberta Environment and Parks said the site was slower than usual due to extremely high traffic.  ....

Gym owners say mandated closure taking toll on mental health of Albertans

Members of Alberta’s fitness and sports industry met earlier this week with the UCP caucus and have agreed to postpone reopening against rulings for another week, but their adherence may be short lived.
Despite the agreement, CTV News has learned that about 200 gym owners are ready to unite and reopen their doors on Feb. 8 if they are not given direction to open sooner. 
Joel Kotkas, one of the founders of the Gyms of Alberta Facebook group and an owner of a gym himself, has not directed businesses to defy public health orders, but is encouraging the more than 4,000 members of the group to contact the province. ....

Usually, the event includes a number of meet-ups with large groups of supporters. For 2021, the event will be held virtually to protect participants from the spread of COVID-19.
“The safety of our members, participants, and the public is of utmost importance, so making the decision to move the Polar Plunge to virtual-only, while unfortunate, was relatively easy for us,” said Chief Lee Newton, LETR executive council chair. ....
