One of Australia’s big three energy utilities, EnergyAustralia, says it appointed chief customer officer Mark Collette as its new managing director, effective July 1, following the decision by Catherine Tanna to retire after seven years at the helm.
It is third departure of a CEO from a major coal generator in little more than a week, following the surprising exit of Brett Redman from AGL in the middle of its demerger plans, and the sudden exit of Ricard van Breda from Stanwell Corp in Queensland after he talked of a possible early closure of some of its coal units. ....

A $350 million tax dispute between the federal government and European Union has threatened to stop banks raising funds from European debt investors.
The government is being forced to end a special tax break for banks and fund managers after the EU threatened to blacklist Australia for running a harmful tax regime.
The OBU regime will be phased out by 2023.Â

The disagreement comes amid separate political tension over the EU blocking the supply of COVID-19 vaccines to Australia.
The tax spat was over Australiaâs offshore banking unit (OBU) regime, which taxes offshore profits of local financial institutions at the concessional rate of 10 per cent, instead of the 30 per cent corporate rate. ....

The Australian Financial Markets Association (AFMA) is concerned about the harm to Australia’s competitiveness as a location for international financial business consequent to the changes to the offshore banking unit (OBU) regime announced today by the Treasurer, the Hon Josh Frydenberg MP.

The OBU regime covers a broad range of trading, investment management and other financial activities that are internationally mobile. Used by banks and other financial entities, it ensures that Australia’s high corporate tax rate does not overwhelm the strong competitive advantages we have developed in non-tax areas, like rule of law, pool of talent, economic stability and access to markets. ....
