The Indian Premier League has been suspended following an increase in players testing positive for Covid-19.
IPL chairman Brijesh Patel has confirmed the move, saying the decision has been made due to safety concerns for all stakeholders.
In a statement, the IPL said the decision was unanimously made by the tournament s Governing Council (IPL GC) and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) following an emergency meeting.
The BCCI does not want to compromise on the safety of the players, support staff and the other participants involved in organising the IPL, the statement said. This decision was taken keeping the safety, health and wellbeing of all the stakeholders in mind. ....

COVID downs IPL: League suspended after multiple cases


NEW DELHI, May 4: A barrage of COVID-19 cases forced the IPL’s indefinite suspension today, a move that was welcomed by the franchises even as the league’s jittery foreign recruits waited for BCCI’s plan of action to ensure their return amid some strict travel restrictions.
The decision to postpone the league was announced after SunRisers Hyderabad batsman Wriddhiman Saha and Delhi Capitals spinner Amit Mishra joined the infected players’ list, which already had Kolkata Knight Riders’ Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier.
Chennai Super Kings’ bowling coach L Balaji was among the prominent non-playing staff to test positive.
“The Indian Premier League Governing Council and BCCI in an emergency meeting has unanimously decided to postpone IPL 2021 season, with immediate effect,” a statement from the IPL read after the development was confirmed by its chairman Brijesh Patel. ....

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended indefinitely a day after multiple people within the bio-secure bubble tested positive for coronavirus, the league s chairman Brijesh Patel confirms.

NEW DELHI, May 4, 2021 (BSS/AFP) – The Indian Premier League, the world’s richest Twenty20 cricket tournament, was suspended on Tuesday and its players sent home as India battles a massive surge in coronavirus cases.
The move, which follows growing controversy over the competition, comes a day after two players — Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier — tested positive, forcing a match to be postponed.
“The Indian Premier League Governing Council and Board of Control for Cricket in India in an emergency meeting has unanimously decided to postpone (the) IPL 2021 season, with immediate effect,” a statement from organisers said. ....
