Reliance Industries stake sales lead to 38% jump in PE investments in 2020: Report

Private equity investments in Indian companies grew 38 per cent to USD 62.2 billion last year, with inflows into Reliance Industries telecom and retail ventures contributing nearly 40 per cent of the total value of the deals, a report said on Wednesday.
Barring investments into Jio Platforms and Reliance Retail, the total deal value was down by 20 per cent over 2019 as the volume of large deals of more than USD 100 million dipped by a fourth, as per the report by Bain & Company and India Venture Capital Association.
Overall investment activity remained muted from March to May last year due to COVID-led uncertainties and investor confidence recovered strongly in the second half to pre-COVID levels with late-stage and buyout deals witnessing increased traction, it said. ....

There was a 64 per cent jump in private equity and venture capital investments in India during the January-March period at USD 8.3 billion across 266 deals compared to the year-ago period, a report said on Thursday.
However, when compared with the preceding December quarter s total of USD 18.5 billion, the investments have declined by 55 per cent.
At USD 1.8 billion, e-commerce recorded the highest quarterly value of investments in the sector in the past five quarters, the report by the consultancy firm EY and industry lobby India Venture Capital Association, said.
There were 22 large deals during the March quarter, through which Indian companies garnered USD 4.8 billion, it said, adding that the same was lower than the immediately preceding December 2020 quarter s USD 16 billion in investment through 30 such deals. ....

Warburg Pincus sold stakes in three companies in India in just a month, fetching the US private equity giant ₹2,500 crore ($345 million), even as the pandemic has slowed the overall pace of exits for buyout firms.
Warburg Pincus carried out liquidity transactions in Bharti Telemedia Ltd, Gangavaram Port Ltd and Kalyan Jewellers India Ltd by selling fully or partly its investments in these companies.
The New York-based PE firm was allotted a stake in parent Bharti Airtel for a part of its stake in Bharti Telemedia. ....
