Fifteen fined RM5,000 each for violating interstate travel ban in Penang

KEPALA BATAS: Fifteen people were slapped with RM5,000 fines each for trying to cross state borders illegally via three illegal routes at oil palm plantations in Kampung Selamat, Padang Serai and Tasek Gelugor.
North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the offenders, aged between 25 and 40, were fined under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342).
The offenders were stopped during a surprise spot check at three different locations along the state border in the district that began at about 4pm Sunday (May 23), he said.
ACP Noorzainy said among the excuses given by the offenders were petty such as wanting to buy food in Kedah and meeting friends in Penang. ....

CNY restrictions not to hamper freedom but to protect loved ones, says PM


PETALING JAYA: Some flexibility was given to allow families whose members live close to one another to have their traditional Chinese New Year reunion dinner despite Covid-19 travel restrictions, says Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
“The traditional reunion dinner practised by the Chinese community on the eve can still be celebrated with meaning among family members.
“Taking into account this important tradition, the government has given a bit of flexibility to allow the reunion dinner with family members living nearby to not more than 15 people on the eve of Chinese New Year, ” Muhyiddin said in his Chinese New Year message on Thursday (Feb 11). ....

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 11 The government will reintroduce the interstate and inter-district travel ban nationwide beginning January 13 as part of measures to contain Covid-19 infections.
Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin made the announcement today, in a live television address.
He also said that residents in states going under recovery movement control order (RMCO) will be restricted to a 10km radius of their homes. ....
