Zika the new bug, avoid pregnancy for now

Express News Service BENGALURU: With the detection of 14 positive cases of the Zika virus in Kerala, and Karnataka on high alert, health professionals point out that pregnant women should not travel to the affected state or come in contact with people travelling from there. Those who have recently come from Kerala should also be cautious about getting pregnant, and it’s best avoided for at least two months, they added. Zika virus is caused by the bite of the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopiticus mosquitoes, and primarily impacts pregnant women, causing neurological disorders in the foetus.  Dr Bharati Kamoji, Senior Consultant - Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Aster CMI Hospital, stated that as the Zika virus can cause severe birth defects, it is recommended that pregnant women should not travel to areas which report Zika outbreak.

Private hospitals wait for Karnataka govt nod to get Covid vaccine stocks

Express News Service BENGALURU: After the Union Government recently announced that private hospitals should place orders on the government’s CoWIN portal for vaccine supply, the Private Hospitals and Nursing Association (PHANA) says they are still waiting for the State Government’s nod to start with the process. After the Centre’s announcement, the State Government had asked private hospitals to register on the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (KPME) portal. Later, the hospitals were again asked to register on the CoWIN portal, but many did not get their vaccine stocks after placing orders. Following this, officials from National Health Mission (NHM) Karnataka, had asked PHANA to wait until they conduct an online training on how to go about the process. Surprisingly, the training hasn’t been carried out so far, and many hospitals are still waiting to get the vaccine stocks to take up inoculation.

Get your Covid jab before third wave: Doctors to pregnant women

Express News Service BENGALURU: While the Union Health Ministry has given its nod for pregnant women to get vaccinated against Covid-19, experts have pointed out that they should come forward and get themselves vaccinated before the third wave sets in. This comes at a time when the second wave has been harsh on pregnant women with many showing serious symptoms, including breathlessness. According to experts, exclusive drives should be arranged for pregnant women and gynaecologists should be present at the site to make the inoculation hassle-free and risk-free. Dr Suhasini Inamdar, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Motherhoood Hospital, Bengaluru, said, “Pregnant women should be vaccinated on priority as the second wave was harsh on them. Vaccination for pregnant women has already commenced and, if they start taking the vaccine right away, then we may be able to cover the entire population of pregnant women before the onset of the third wave.”
