Watchdog clears Winnipeg police officers in fatal shooting of man

Manitoba s police watchdog says two Winnipeg officers who shot and killed a 36-year-old man while responding to a domestic incident call last spring will not face any charges.
Winnipeg police previously said a man – since identified as Jason Collins – was shot by officers in the early morning hours of April 9, 2020. He had been taken to Health Sciences Centre in critical condition, and died from his injuries.
On Wednesday, more than a year after the shooting, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) released its report into the death, clearing the two officers who shot Collins – who is referred to in the IIU report only as Affected Person. ....

An officer from Portage la Prairie is set to appear in court following a string of charges.
On November 4 at 10:19 a.m. RCMP officers were called to Oxford Common Street in Portage la Prairie. Officers responding to the call located an off-duty Manitoba First Nations Police Service officer whom they believed to be involved in an alleged assault.
RCMP officers arrested the suspect, bringing him to the RCMP detachment. After investigating, officers brought the matter to the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) the next day, triggering an investigation.
After investigating, IIU s Civilian Director Zane Tessler determined there are reasonable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred. Tessler is authorizing the suspect to be charged with assault, mischief and breach of undertaking under sections, 266, 430(4) and 145(4)(a) of the Criminal Code. ....
