South Gujarat pounded; Umargam lashed by 200mm in two hours | Surat News

SURAT: Umargam in Valsad district was pounded with nearly 200 mm rainfall in just two hours on Sunday as heavy rain threw normal life out of gear in south Gujarat.
Umargam received maximum rainfall of over 225 in 12 hours till 6pm on Sunday. The taluka received 200 mm inches of rainfall in just two hours between 6am and 8am.
Industrial town of Vapi too was lashed with nearly 225 mm rain during the same period followed by 150 mm in Navsari’s Jalalpore taluka and Valsad each.
Among other areas, Gandevi, Khergam and Chikhli talukas in Navsari and Kamrej and Bardoli in Surat district also heavily drenched. ....

Seven park-bred spotted deer released in Vansda National Park | Surat News

Surat: In an effort to increase herbivore population in the wild especially in and around Vansda National Park, seven more spotted deer were soft released on Saturday. The animals from the park’s deer breeding centre was released in presence of state minister Ganpatsinh Vasava.
“Till now many animals 36 are spotted deer and 3-4 horned antelope have been released in the wild successfully and on Saturday seven more spotted deer were soft released which will be released in the wild later, Nilesh Pandya, deputy conservator of forests, Dang (south) division, told TOI.
The VNP, which falls under the Dang (South) forest division, is spread over 23.99 sq km and is situated on a hilly terrain with moderate altitudes. These hills are extension of Sahyadri range. Gavier wetland all set for conservation cover | Surat News

Surat: There is some good news for the nature lovers in Surat. The forest department has zeroed in on the Gavier wetland on the Surat-Dumas road for the conservation of the local biodiversity in the city.
At present, the Gavier Lake is managed by the city-based Nature Club Surat (NCS). The forest department will discuss with Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) authorities the plans for preservation and expansion of the wetland and how to develop more such wetlands in and around Surat city for increasing the biodiversity hotspots.
Officials of the forest department led by chief conservator of forest (Surat Range), CK Sonawane and deputy conservator of forest (DCF) Puneet Nayyar had carried out the bird count and discussed the preservation plan of the wetland with the NCS volunteers. ....
