Patch Tuesday Microsoft s May Patch Tuesday brought a lighter-than-usual load of 55 fixes for 32 of the Windows giant s applications and services, which is about half what was served up in April.
The Redmond-based firm s Office and Windows flagships house many of the identified vulnerabilities, alongside Internet Explorer, Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, Skype, and other software.
Among the 55 CVEs identified by Microsoft, four are rated critical, 50 are rated important, and one is rated moderate.
Those who recall the slew of Exchange Server fixes in March and April may experience a sense of deja vu: May brings still more Exchange Server fixes, for Exchange Server 2013 CU23, Exchange Server 2016 CU19 and CU20, and Exchange Server 2019 CU8 and CU9. ....

Wormable Windows Bug Opens Door to DoS, RCE

Microsoft’s May 2021 Patch Tuesday updates include fixes for four critical security vulnerabilities.
Microsoft’s May Patch Tuesday release addressed a modest 55 cybersecurity vulnerabilities, including just four critical bugs. It’s the smallest monthly update from the computing giant since 2020, but it does contain a patch for a concerning wormable vulnerability found in the Windows OS.
The good news is that none of the vulnerabilities are being actively exploited in the wild, according to Microsoft, though three are listed as publicly known.
The fixes address security flaws across Microsoft Windows, .NET Core and Visual Studio, Internet Explorer (IE), Microsoft Office, SharePoint Server, Open-Source Software, Hyper-V, Skype for Business and Microsoft Lync, and Exchange Server. Besides the four critical bugs, 50 are rated “important” and one is moderate in severity. ....

Microsoft Patch Tuesday: 4 Critical CVEs, 3 ...

This month brought patches for 55 CVEs in Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, .NET Core and Visual Studio, Internet Explorer, SharePoint Server, Hyper-V, Skype for Business and Microsoft Lync, Open Source Software, and Exchange Server. Fifty of these vulnerabilities are classified as Important in severity, one as Moderate.
One concerning CVE to prioritize is CVE-2021-31166, a critical remote code execution flaw in the HTTP protocol stack with a CVSS score of 9.8. An attack using this would be low in complexity and require no privileges or user interaction, Microsoft says in its disclosure.
To exploit this, an attacker would need to send a specially crafted packet to a vulnerable server using the HTTP protocol stack to process packets. This makes the bug wormable, a danger Microsoft points out. And as Dustin Childs of Trend Micro s ZDI writes in a blog post, Windows 10 can be configured as a server, meaning it s also affected. ....
