AMMAN Ahead of Syrian presidential elections scheduled for May 26 (and May 2o for expatriates), Bashar al-Assad issued a legislative decree on May 2 granting a general amnesty for crimes committed before that date, which is the 18th general amnesty since the Syrian revolution broke out in the spring of 2011. 
After winning the previous 2014 presidential election, al-Assad issued a general amnesty, citing “social tolerance, national cohesion and the requirements of coexistence.” But the latest decree has been put forward just before the elections with the aim of “using it as a tool for propaganda to increase his popularity, as it is the last card in his deck,” Mustafa al-Qasem ....

ISTANBUL Worse than the “back-breaking” work that Muhammad Hourani does for 11 hours a day, is that it will be interrupted for weeks due to a total lockdown imposed by Turkey as a preventative measure against the COVID-19 virus from April 29 to May 17. 
Hourani, a 16-year-old Syrian refugee, works at an upholstery workshop in Turkey’s İzmir province where he lives with his family, displaced from the Damascus district of Jobar in 2018. He has not received “any compensation or wages from my employer for the days of the curfew,” he told ....

The widespread or systematic practice of enforced disappearance constitutes “a crime against humanity,” according to international law. Syrian regime’s forces, however, saw no crime in arresting several of Aya’s family members, whom the State considers “terrorists.”  
As if arresting and forcibly disappearing Aya’s relatives was not enough, the Syrian regime’s forces denied the family their right to dispose of their moveable and immovable assets. ....
