Students take home awards for Marion art exhibit

MARION  Four students have been awarded prizes in the Marion Art Center’s ongoing High School art exhibit focusing on covid. 
The center’s exhibition committee based their decisions on the following: skill and technique, overall presentation, creative use of medium, written artist statement and how closely the work aligned with the show’s theme. 
First place went to Emma Zhou of Tabor Academy for her piece “Connections or Lack Thereof.”
“One thing that I struggled with a lot during the pandemic has been connections, and feeling disconnected from my friends and the rest of the world,” Zhou said. “I felt lonely and unable to reach out, and I showed that in this piece.” ....

Students take inspiration from Black history

Students wowed the judges with artwork, poetry and essays submitted to Tri-Town Against Racism’s Black History Month Creative Expression Contest.
A total of 38 students in grades seven through twelve in the Tri-Town submitted work to be judged by Tangi Thomas, the president of the organization, and three community members: Darrin Garcia, Jean DaSilva and Janis Johnson.
Aliyah Jordan, a Tabor student, came in first place for her poem titled “Heroes Unsung.”
“The judges were completely floored by both her poem and her reciting of it,” said Alison Noyce of the organization. “She perfectly embodied the theme of our contest, Beyond Martin and Rosa, by honoring a teenager [named Claudette Colvin] who refused to give up her seat in the front of the bus to a white person nine months before Rosa Parks did the same thing.” ....

ORRHS students chosen for UMass exhibit

From the struggles of the Black community to the difficulties of mental illness, Tri-Town students are tackling tough topics in their artwork  and it’s not going unrecognized. 
Three pieces of artwork by Old Rochester Regional High School Students were selected for the University of Massachusetts College of Visual and Performing Arts Emerging Young Artist Juried Exhibition. 
Emma Carroll, Rachel Pina and Autumn Tilley each submitted their artwork as an assignment for their AP Art and Design class. Of over 400 submissions throughout New England, the students’ works were among just 88 selected for the exhibit.  ....
