The Palaszczuk Government has announced more than 4,600 hectares of land will become protected habitat for wildlife, while half-a-million dollars will be provided to dozens of property owners across the state to safeguard nature refuges.
Visiting 30 hectares of land today on the southern Gold Coast to be declared a new nature refuge, Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said the move would ensure more crucial habitat for Queensland’s native wildlife with 4,400 hectares to be added to the state’s national parks, 144 hectares to nature refuges, and 82 hectares to conservation parks – equivalent to 8,500 football fields. ....

The Moggill Koala Rehabilitation Centre has undergone a major refurbishment with the newly modernised facility now equipped with cutting-edge treatment and diagnostic equipment.
Minister for Environment and Science Meaghan Scanlon was on hand to welcome the first koalas into the new centre and to oversee their Chlamydia vaccinations, as part of an exciting trial to beat the devastating disease plaguing the koala population.
“The Queensland Government committed $830,000 to support the Moggill Koala Rehabilitation Centre in its role as a specialist rehabilitation centre supporting sick, injured and orphaned koalas and preparing them for release back to the wild,” Ms Scanlon said. ....

Queensland now has new laws to ban single-use straws.
Polystyrene foam food containers and cups as well as single-use plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery and plates will all be banned from September 1, 2021 under new legislation passed by Queensland Parliament today (WED?).
Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said there was overwhelming community support for banning these types of products which were too often discarded thoughtlessly.
“Plastic pollution is spoiling our streets and parks, escaping into our ocean and waterways and killing our iconic wildlife,” Minister Scanlon said. ....
