Missing the point about embryos Christopher Barbara (May 6) completely misses the point made by Ivan Padovani’s note which highlighted the incontestable fact that every human adult was at one point a zygote. Whether we should casually call the early embryo a “miniature baby” or not, no biologist could, or would, deny that she was a zygote at the earliest instant of her life. I was once a zygote, even you, the reader of this letter was once a zygote. The argument for abortion is not a scientific one but an ideological one which is why Barbara rapidly shifts the line of thought away from science to one of social policy and women’s health. ....
Precursors to human persons It has been rather amusing reading Ivan Padovani’s contribution (‘When life begins’, March 6) in which he asserts that my statements were of “questionable accuracy”. Similarly, John Pace (‘When human life begins’, March 11) accuses me of turning “mist into a fog”. This is because people like Padovani and Pace who try to frame religious beliefs, such as “life begins at conception/fertilisation”, as scientific fact struggle to justify their assertions with any scientific proof because no such proof exists. Ticket refunds Air Malta refers to the letter by Anthony Curmi entitled ‘Refunds due by Air Malta’ (February 20). Our records show that Curmi’s tickets were originally purchased through an online travel agency as part of a group. When flights were subsequently cancelled, the group applied to Air Malta for travel vouchers and these were issued accordingly. Air Malta wishes to reassure its customers that it will honour all commitments undertaken. We have been in touch with Curmi and resolved the matter to the satisfaction of both parties. Air Malta also refers to the letter by Anthony Girard entitled ‘Air Malta refunds’ (February 23). ....
