New Bedford Man With Knife Arrested in Liquor Store Altercation


NEW BEDFORD A New Bedford man armed with a knife has been arrested and charged following an alleged altercation Monday night in the city’s North End.
On May 10 at around 8 p.m., officers responded to the area of Acushnet Avenue and Collette Street for a report of a male with a knife. Police say bystanders directed officers to the suspect, who approached the police cruiser and used his knife to strike its window several times.
“He ignored numerous commands to drop his weapon and became increasingly agitated as officers arrived on scene,” police said in a release. “Ultimately, responding officers successfully de-escalated the situation and the suspect returned to the sidewalk, dropped the knife, and placed his hands behind his back. He was then taken into custody.” ....

New Bedford Seafood Company Agrees to Pay $220K EPA Penalty
NEW BEDFORD A New Bedford seafood processing company has agreed to pay a $220,000 penalty in a settlement with the Environmental Protection Agency.
The EPA claims that Northeastern Pelagic Group, LLC, also known as NorPel, “violated the chemical accident prevention requirements of the federal Clean Air Act and the hazardous chemical reporting requirements under the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act” at its New Bedford plant, according to a release.
The EPA alleged that NorPel failed to file a Risk Management Plan with the organization for the significant amount of ammonia stored at the facility. The EPA also claims NorPel had not “adequately designed, operated, or maintained” its refrigeration system, and that it failed to file a required chemical inventory report in 2015. ....
