Nearly THIRD of Israelis on unemployment benefits refuse to return to work as economy reopens – survey

About a third of people who receive unemployment checks in Israel don’t want to work again, the government data says. Many of them are happy to continue living off benefits even as the economy is reopening.
Around 20,000 people, which is nearly 30% of workers currently living off unemployment benefits, are refusing to return to work, the data from the Central Bureau of Statistics show.
Roughly 64% of those refusing to work again say they prefer to keep receiving unemployment checks.
Hundreds of thousands were forced to stop working due to extremely tough quarantine measures, with the number of unemployed rising to 560,000 shortly after a third nationwide lockdown came into effect in late December. The lockdown was eventually eased as the immunization campaign kicked in. ....

Fewer people signed up for unemployment benefits in the third lockdown, which began December 27 and began to ease this week, than in the second. However, many of those who registered during the second lockdown did not return to work and were still jobless during the third one.
The agency also noted that for every person who returned to work in January, seven others registered as unemployed. In September, during the second lockdown, that ratio was one to 5.7.
In January, 127,700 people registered for unemployment benefits, an increase of 56.4 percent from December 2020. Only 18,200 reported they had returned to work, the lowest monthly total since the start of the crisis, the employment service said. ....

Israel’s unemployment rate rises to 19.5%

Jerusalem, Feb 15 : The Covid pandemic crisis has led to a spike in Israel’s unemployment count to around 805,000, said the Central Bureau of Statistics and the Israeli Employment Service on Monday.
With the new figure, the unemployment rate in Israel stands at 19.5 percent, compared to 13.9 percent in early January, 22.7 per cent in last mid-October and a peak of 27.5 per cent at the end of April 2020 with more than 1 million unemployed people.
This is a significant increase compared to 565,000 unemployed in Israel as recorded in January 4, Xinhua reported. ....

Israel reports 4,227 new COVID-19 cases, 643,006 in total


JERUSALEM, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) Israel s Ministry of Health reported 4,227 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, bringing the tally in the country to 643,006.
The death toll from the COVID-19 in Israel reached 4,786 after 48 new fatalities were added, while the number of patients in serious condition decreased from 1,173 to 1,165, out of 1,802 hospitalized patients.
The total recoveries rose to 572,410, with 10,598 newly recovered cases, while the active cases decreased to 65,810.
The number of people vaccinated against the COVID-19 in Israel has surpassed 3.05 million, or 32.8 percent of its total population, since the vaccination campaign began on Dec. 20, 2020
Earlier on Sunday, the Israeli Employment Service said that the number of new unemployed people in Israel since the start of the ongoing full lockdown on Dec. 27, 2020 has reached 163,104. ....
