Jakarta (AsiaNews) – In an official statement released today by Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Minister Mahfud MD, the Indonesian government announced that the notorious Islamic Defender Front (FPI) is illegal and banned.
According to the minister, one of the reasons behind the decision is a video showing members of the group declaring their affiliation with the Islamic State (IS) group and their full support for its presence in the country. ....

Supporters of firebrand Indonesian Muslim leader Rizieq Shihab have clashed with police during a demonstration in Jakarta, after demanding their spiritual figurehead be released from police detention.
Several hundred protesters had gathered in the capital of the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation on Friday, with scuffles breaking out after police told the group that large gatherings were prohibited amid the pandemic.
“For the safety of our souls … the police and the military will disperse [protesters] and act decisively,” a police officer told protesters, blasting the message through a sound system.
The police have been investigating the controversial scholar for violations of health protocols during the pandemic after large gatherings to mark his return to Indonesia in November after fleeing to Saudi Arabia in 2017. ....

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Supporters of firebrand Indonesian cleric Rizieq Shihab clashed with police during a demonstration in Jakarta on Friday, after demanding their spiritual figurehead be released from police detention.
Several hundred protesters, some dressed in white Islamic garb, had gathered in the capital of the world s largest Muslim-majority nation, with scuffles breaking out after police told the group large gatherings were prohibited amid the pandemic.

Vigilante group conducts army-like training

VIGILANTE group Islamic Defenders’ Front (FPI) has enticed ex-members of disbanded Muslim hardline group Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) to join them, and conducted army-like training for young recruits.
The revelation came as police released more details of what happened during a shoot-out between police and FPI leader Rizieq Shihab’s bodyguards last week.
“They recruited the die-hard types from Garut, Sukabumi, Bogor to train in Megamendung to become laskar (paramilitary troops), ” said a senior government official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“This is high militancy and calls for a prompt action.” ....
