Santa Maria care home latest to deal with COVID outbreak

As COVID-19 case numbers continue to rise in Saskatchewan, more and more care homes are seeing outbreaks.
An outbreak was declared on the second floor of the the Santa Maria Senior Citizens’ Home on Dec. 18, and by Tuesday, the home confirmed there were 20 positive cases.
In an email, the home’s executive director, Kelly Chessie, said the home is still in the early stages of the outbreak. The home is working closely with the Saskatchewan Health Authority and Public Health to monitor and contain the spread, and to ensure there is enough staff and enough personal protective equipment. ....

Sask. reports 5 deaths and 159 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday

Communications sent to families of residents at Extendicare Parkside show that deaths have continued to mount at the facility, the site of the largest care home outbreak in the province. A message dated Tuesday puts total deaths among COVID-19-positive residents at 32. There were seven residents with COVID-19 in hospital at that time, and just four remaining positive cases among residents still at the home.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) confirmed those numbers on Wednesday.
It has declared COVID-19 outbreaks at additional care homes in recent days, including at the 120-bed Mont. St. Joseph special care home in Prince Albert on Monday. That same day, an outbreak was declared at an Eden Care Communities assisted living facility in Regina. ....

Eden Care Communities awarded for healthcare delivery

Eden Care Communities has been recognized for the innovative approach to long-term care with Memory Lane.
They were presented with the 2019-2020 Innovation in Healthcare Delivery Award by the Centre on Aging and Health at the University of Regina.
CEO Alan Stephen says the award shows that Eden Care staff are doing a great job at making life worth living for seniors in Regina.
“It means a lot, especially for our care partners,” said Stephen. “We are constantly combating the plagues of loneliness, helplessness, and boredom in the aging process. And this just another way of assisting in the elimination of those terrible plagues.” ....
