Provincial Minister and the Restaurant Industry have Different Views on the State of the Industry

The Saskatchewan NDP urged the province to enact measures to save summer 2021 and boost the province’s economy.
One proposal was the removal of PST on restaurant meals to help the tourism sector during reopening.
Trades and Economic Development Minister Jeremy Harrison says the province has worked hard to make sure restaurants stay open during the pandemic, adding they’re in great shape for the summer.He claims the sector has a high degree of understanding that because of the approach the government has taken they have been able to operate and keep employees employed.
It’s unclear who in the restaurant sector the minister has been talking to. Restaurants Canada says restaurants in this province need a sector-specific survival package to bring back over nine thousand jobs; a quarter of the province’s food service workforce. EDMONTON, Alberta, May 13, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) Restaurants Canada is calling for a sector-specific support package to recover more than 400,000 foodservice jobs including 52,500 jobs still missing from Alberta s restaurant sector.
Restaurants are key to feeding Alberta s recovery and bringing back jobs, but first they need to survive, said Mark von Schellwitz, Restaurants Canada Vice President, Western Canada. If subsidies are scaled back too soon, they won t have the working capital they need to transition from survival to revival.

Canada's restaurant industry demands sector-specific support to survive the pandemic

Restaurants Canada is calling on the federal government to provide a sector-specific support package in order to recover more than 400,000 food service jobs lost throughout the pandemic.
According to the April Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada, more than two-thirds (70.9 per cent) of the 503,000 jobs still missing from the Canadian economy are from the foodservice industry and, as restrictions and closures are maintained in many provinces, Restaurants Canada predicts further food service jobs lost in May 2021.
“We were hit first, we were hit hardest, and we will continue to be hit, long after others are,“ James Rilett, Restaurants Canada Vice President, Central Canada, told CTV News Toronto on Thursday. ....
