A University of Southern Queensland researcher is turning trash into treasure in a new project in the Lockyer Valley.
University of Southern Queensland post-graduate student Christine Blanchard is successfully combining her day job with doctoral studies to make her corner of the world more environmentally prosperous.
As the Waste Coordinator for the Lockyer Valley Regional Council, Christine is involved in trial funding under the State Government’s Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) program.
“The trial will be based on providing 900 households in Gatton and Laidley with an additional rubbish bin that’s specifically for food scraps and garden waste,” Christine said. ....

Council surplus for 2021/22 budget

Devonport City Council’s draft 2021/22 Budget shows a solid result with a proposed operating surplus, modest rate increase and a strong capital works program.
Devonport Mayor Annette Rockliff said the local economy remains robust and the current forecast indicates Council’s 20/21 operating result, in an unpredictable COVID-19 environment being far better than the original estimate of a $2.2 million deficit.
“Council has developed a responsible budget for the next financial year and is pleased to be able to estimate a net operating surplus of $458,814, ensuring long-term financial sustainability, following a year which required radical action due to the pandemic,” Cr Rockliff said. ....

FOGO goes shire wide from July
In July, Council will expand the Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) service shire-wide to all Macedon Ranges households. This completes the roll-out, which began in February 2020 to over 16,000 properties across the shire.
Properties and households new to the FOGO service will receive a letter detailing upcoming changes in the coming weeks, including the date for bin deliveries.
“Since the FOGO bins launched, over 9,257 tonnes of organic material has been saved from landfill,” said Shane Walden, Director Assets and Operations.
FOGO material is turned into a nutrient-rich compost for farms and gardens across Victoria. It will also help local school gardens grow, with Council supplying free compost during Compost Awareness Week (2-8 May). ....
