San Luis works about 35 hours a week as a clerk and online shopper at the local Safeway. She s been working there for about a year now. But when the coronavirus pandemic arrived on the island and social gatherings and after-school activities became limited, San Luis decided to pick up some extra shifts.
I was like, oh, I should be asking for more hours, San Luis said. Because we can t do anything here just like sit in the house.
There s not much for a teenager to do on an isolated Aleutian island during the coronavirus pandemic, especially in the winter, according to San Luis no traveling with family, no sports, limited outdoor activities, and no parties. Unalaska School District Announces 10 Vacancies, Hires New Superintendent

The Unalaska City School District will have to fill a total of 10 vacancies for the upcoming school year.
Eight teachers, the Unalaska High School registrar, and Eagle s View Elementary Achigaalux̂ Principal Chad Eichenlaub have all submitted letters of resignation, according to Superintendent John Conwell.
The vacancies are equally split among the island s elementary and high schools. The openings at the high school include alternative education and language arts, taught by Amy Purevsuren, who has been with the district for 13 years; high school social studies, currently taught by Ryan Humphrey; another high school language arts position held by Jacob Collins-Wilson; and seventh through ninth grade math, currently taught by Emma Carr ....

Unalaska High School Administration Reports Alarming Failure Rates Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact in-person learning in Unalaska, nearly a third of the island s high school population is failing at least one class, according to school officials. And some seniors could be at risk of not graduating.
The Unalaska City School District is normally a top performer. Last year, the district had a 97 percent graduation rate. But this year, district officials say they re alarmed at the number of high schoolers failing classes, as they learn under a hybrid model that limits their time in classrooms.
Thirty percent of all high school students are failing at least one class, according to High School Principal Jim Wilson. ....
