Uttarakhand: Eight dead, six critical after avalanche hits Malari-Sumna area | Dehradun News

The incident took place around 4pm on Friday when an avalanche hit a location about 4km ahead of Sumna on Sumna - Rimkhim road in Uttarakhand.
DEHRADUN: At least eight bodies have been recovered so far after an avalanche triggered by an alleged glacier burst hit the Malari-Sumna area in Uttarakhand along the India-China border on Friday.
A communique from the Army said 384 labourers working with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in the area had been rescued and six of them were critical.
“The incident took place around 4pm on Friday when an avalanche hit a location about 4 km ahead of Sumna on Sumna - Rimkhim road in Uttarakhand. This is on Joshimath - Malari- Girthidobla - Sumna- Rimkhim axis. A BRO detachment and two labour camps exist nearby for road construction work along this axis. An Army camp is located 3 km from Sumna. The area has experienced heavy rains and snow since the last five days which is still continuing,” the communique further said. ....

The 30-member expert team has widened the mouth of the lake that was formed upstream Rishiganga river by 15 feet,
Hindustan Timesreports.
This lake was formed by flash floods caused in Chamoli district in Uttarakhand. State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) commandant Navneet Bhullar mentioned that the lakeâs mouth widening has led to quicker drainage and it will prevent another occurrence of a similar tragedy.
Bhullar added, âIn a daring effort, the team has widened the mouth of the lake in a very difficult terrain, which has increased the discharge from the lake. Due to this, the chances of lake burst or Chamoli-like tragedy happening again have been averted. And our team members are still camping there to try to widen the mouth further.â ....

Lake formation at Rishi Ganga river poses bigger threat than Sunday flood

TAPOVAN: A lake that was formed in the absence of flow in the Rishi Ganga river now poses a greater risk of disaster, if it bursts, than that of the Sunday flashfloods, rue experts.
However, the scientists familiar with the landscape said that the water from the lake started draining on Friday which minimizes the chances of bursting of the water body.
YP Sundariyal, head of the department of geology department of Hemvanti Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University said, The lake is around 250-300 meters long, 80-100 meters wide and of about 25-30 meters height. The lake has a big volume of water and hypothetically speaking if it bursts, it can cause more damage than earlier. Big relief is that the water is slowly draining from the lake so it will not burst. The authorities should try to drain the lake without trying to burst it using experts. ....
