Tirath yatra ends

IN a damage-control exercise to contain discontent against the then Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat with just a year to go for the Assembly elections, the BJP had sprung a surprise by picking the Lok Sabha MP from Pauri-Garhwal, Tirath Singh Rawat, as his replacement in March. Now, nearly four months into the job, he’s out as well. The prospect of his not being able to fulfil the constitutional requirement of becoming an MLA within six months is being cited as the reason for the state getting its third CM — Pushkar Singh Dhami — within one term. That, however, could just be a convenient alibi for the party high command to spare itself the blushes and correct the mistake of para-dropping an MP, who has proven to be quite an unpopular one, instead of banking on established or promising legislators.

New Delhi, May 14 : At a time when the whole world is seeking solution to get rid of the Covid pandemic, former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said the virus is a "living organism and it deserves to live".
Rawat's unusual video statement went viral on social media in which he said that the pandemic is a living organism like human being so that it also has the right to live.
His remarks triggered stinging barbs from Opposition leaders who had described his statement as not just "insensitive", but also "foolish".

As COVID-19 swamps India, decision to allow Kumbh Mela's crowds is scrutinized

MUMBAI (RNS) — As COVID-19 infections rise in India, the local and national government’s decision to allow a shortened edition of a festival known as Kumbh Mela is being scrutinized as a cause for some of the spread of the virus but also a sign of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP-led government favoring Hindu beliefs over safety.
Kumbh Mela, a Hindu festival that takes place on the banks of the Ganges River in Haridwar, in the hill state of Uttarakhand, was held through April, with two of its most sacred bathing days attracting millions. Typically lasting from January to April, it is held approximately once every 12 years, with the last edition held in 2010.

The Political Fix: What makes a successful BJP chief minister in the Modi-Shah era?

What will the factionalism within the Congress mean for its prospects in Kerala?
Now that Himanta Biswa Sarma is contesting in Assam, even though he said he didn’t want to, is there likelihood of a change in chief minister if the Bharatiya Janata Party returns to power?
But this week we are looking at a couple of developments a little further away from the election spotlight that tell us more about how the BJP is working to entrench its dominance of Indian politics. The obvious caveat to any discussion of BJP success is that Indian politics simply does not present a level playing field to all, which is what we covered on last week’s edition of the newsletter.
