WaterAid for adequate budget allocation for early childhood development

While commending the government for increasing the budget allocation to early childhood development (ECD) from K803 million in the 2019/2020 budget to K3 billion in the 2020/2021 budget, WaterAid Malawi contends that the allocation still falls short of the MGDS III’s recommended K4.9 billion allocation.
In a statement, WaterAid’s coordinator for policy & sector engagement, Lloyd Mtalimanja says this is especially concerning in that “although Government surpassed the MGDS III’s target for budget allocation to the Education & Skills Development sector by about 75% in the 2020/2021 budget, it still underfunded ECD”.
“This suggests that ECD is not adequately prioritized in budget allocations. Regrettably the 2019/20 ECD budget estimate also fell short of the minimum recommended expenditure on ECD proposed in the MGDS III by MK3.5 billion (81%),” Mtalimanja said. ....

New project breathes fresh life into Malawi’s Kasungu National Park
By Travel Reporter
By The Daily Times
Kasungu National Park, located in the Central Region of Malawi and bordering Zambia, was once a popular tourist destination.
However, 20 years down the line one can feel how outrageous poaching has turned the country’s second largest Park, lying on 2100 square kilometres, from an exciting tourist holiday hot spot to a desolate amusement place.
Once teeming with abundant species of animals, including elephants, it is now an embodiment of a ghost forest. Animal densities have fallen low.
Lifupa Lodge, which was built in the middle of the park to accommodate tourists, looks spooky and deserted. ....

Agriculture, mining sectors raise hope as economy struggles to recover

Agriculture, mining sectors raise hope as economy struggles to recover
Isaac Mufumba
Ten days ago, Bank of Uganda (BoU) Governor Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, while releasing the monetary report for April, revealed that whereas some level of economic recovery had been realised during the first quarter of 2021, the economy will remain subdued. Mr Mutebile pegged the prospects of the economy’s vibrancy on how the campaign to immunise Ugandans against Covid-19 will pan out. “Nonetheless, the recovery is expected to strengthen with above trend growth…as vaccine effectiveness increases,” Mr Mutebile said. Whereas Mr Mutebile did not detail the extent of the havoc that was caused by the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown introduced as a containment measure, it is now emerging that the pandemic actually wiped out the growth of yesteryears and caused the economy to shrink. By how much has economy shrunk? BoU director for resea ....
