Surfing-Australia names Olympic team after jellyfish to instil killer instinct

March 17 (Reuters) - Australia’s surfing team have named themselves the Irukandjis after one of the deadliest species of jellyfish on the planet, as they seek to inject a bit of cold-blooded killer instinct into their preparations for this year’s Tokyo Olympics.
The team settled on the world s smallest jellyfish, a native to the country s northern waters, because the tiny creatures pack a serious punch , Surfing Australia chief executive, Chris Mater said in a statement here on Wednesday.
The name Irukandji refers to several similar, extremely venomous species of box-jellyfish, which have an adult size of about a cubic centimetre, and actively hunt prey and fire stingers into their victims. ....

Council has called for tenders from businesses keen to operate on, and adjacent to, Main Beach.
Learn-to-surf lessons, beach equipment hire, kayak hire and tours, surf dancing, kite surfing, refreshment vans and beach massage are among the commercial activities Council will award 10 Commercial High Use Permits for.
Council will award 10 Commercial High Use Permits for a range of specific commercial activities on public land.
These include learn-to-surf lessons, beach equipment hire, kayak hire and tours, surf dancing, kite surfing, refreshment vans and beach massage.
Council’s Property Manager, Clint Irwin, said the new permits would commence July 1, 2021, for a five-year term. ....

An Australian champion surfer said naming a national sporting team after an extremely venomous jellyfish that inhabit Australian waters let s the competition know they mean business.
On March 17, 2021, Surfing Australia announced all its surfing team will combine under The Irukandjis: Deadly in the Water, named after the Irukandji jellyfish.
Three times world para surfing champion and recent Lennox Head resident Matt Formston, 42, said he s thrilled all the different surfing genres, including Junior, Open, Masters, Olympic, Longboard, Big Wave, Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) and Adaptive disciplines, would compete under The Irukandjis national identity and united colours at international events such as the Olympics, International Surfing Association (ISA), World Surfing Games, WSL World Juniors and Longboard Championships. ....
