PRAZ Backs Law Changes To Promote Locally Manufactured Goods

THE Procurement and Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (PRAZ) has tabled plans to push for amendments on the purchasing law in order to promote locally manufactured goods.
Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com Business on the sidelines of a media engagement meeting this week past week, PRAZ acting chief executive officer, Clever Ruswa said the proposed amendment will drive procurement.
“Our intention is to incorporate the measures in the regulations by aligning with other policies approved through cabinet and parliament.
“The strategy also falls in line with government policy on local content by giving specific quotas to Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs),” he said. ....

WHEN in November 2017, the Federal Government formally signed a $5.8 billion contract for the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project in Taraba State, it was seen as a watershed in the long history of the project that was billed to become Nigeria’s largest electricity producer with an installed capacity of 3,050 megawatts.
With the engineering, procurement and construction, EPC, contracts awarded to a consortium of Chinese companies, led by China Gezhouba Group, 85 percent of the financing for the project was to be provided by the China Exim Bank, while the Federal Government was expected to bear 15 percent of the cost. Despite the contracts agreement, work on the project has been delayed following legal issues and other bureaucratic bottlenecks. ....

Holiday Spending Upsurge Triggers Price Increases

PRICES of some basic goods have significantly increased since the start of the festive season as retailers took advantage of increased holiday spending, a new Government survey shows.
The Department of Policy Research and Consumer Affairs under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce did a survey of price movements and availability in Harare and Midlands provinces of the 16 monitored commodities including maize-meal, sugar, cooking oil and washing soaps, which revealed an increase in prices for selected goods.
Despite an increase in prices of selected products, commodities were generally available, the survey noted. While the surveyed outlets are formal, a snap survey by The Herald Finance & Business showed that prices at informal outlets, commonly known as tuck shops that predominantly charge in US dollars, were generally stable. ....
