Kota Kinabalu: Thirteen associations in Sabah appealed to the State Government to hear their concerns on the imprompt promulgation of Minimum Housing Act 446 - Employees’ Minimum Standards of Housing Accommodations & Amenities Act under the Emergency Ordinance, that was extended to Sabah and Sarawak effective Feb. 26, this year.

MBAM: Improve Covid-19 Act to offer solid protection for construction players


KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 26): Master Builders Association Malaysia (MBAM) hopes that the government can further improve the Temporary Measures for Reducing the Impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) Act 2020 to offer more solid and permanent protection to construction industry players.
This is especially with regards to extension of time provision and cost sharing, said its president Tan Sri Sufri Mohd Zin.
“Contractors have been taking proactive measures to test their workers, even when there is no surety of claims and currently, there is no provision for this actual expense. As it is, margins are already thinning and this is still an unresolved matter for many members,” he said in a statement today. ....

Give us a year before enforcing new worker housing laws, builders' groups urge Government


PETALING JAYA: Construction industry players are appealing to the Government for a one-year grace period before enforcing new laws on standard housing for their workers.
They said the latest amendments to the Employees’ Minimum Standards of Housing, Accommodations and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446) need time for compliance.
“While we commend the initiative to provide a conducive living space for workers, the amendments to Act 446 which were gazetted on Feb 17,2021, as part of the Emergency Ordinance took place at a rather (inopportune) time while taking into account the unfavourable economic situation, they said in a joint statement on Thursday (Feb 25).
“The rising of construction costs and standard operating procedure compliance costs have caused cash flow problems and financial constraints for contractors. ....
