Getting a COVID-19 vaccination appointment at one of the vaccination sites provided by area pharmacies seems to be a hit-or-miss proposition at this time, based on periodic examinations of those pharmacy websites.
Appointment slots open, remain open for a while, then fill up, leaving no slots available until pharmacies receive their next vaccine shipments.
Several days ago, several sites had appointments available, then several hours later, they didn’t but the next day, some of them did.
Early Thursday evening, Mainline Pharmacy of Ebensburg had appointments available for Tuesday at its mass vaccination site at the Jaffa Shrine Center; CVS Altoona was fully booked; Giant Eagle in Logan Towne Center had openings starting April 8; Weis Market had no appointments available for the coming week; Walmart had appointments available at its Plank Road Commons and Leamersville locations; and Rite Aid had no appointments available at its Hollida ....

Bedford reverses debated change | News, Sports, Jobs

bkibler@altoonamirror.com
The Bedford County 911 Center on Thursday reversed a controversial change it made four months ago by restoring a five-minute interval for ambulance services to commit to answering emergency calls.
Four months ago, the center reduced the time it gave ambulance services to muster a crew to about 2.5 minutes, because of increasingly long and increasingly frequent delays before patients received help, especially after COVID-19 mushroomed in Bedford County, according to officials.
But all seven volunteer ambulance services in the county objected that the shorter interval was inadequate, which, coupled with easing of the COVID-19 outbreak, led to a recent compromise agreement to bring back the five minutes for the first service called although reduced times remain for secondary services, while paging responsibilities for the 911 Center have shrunk. ....

Blair, AMED to ink deal for clinic | News, Sports, Jobs

bkibler@altoonamirror.com
AMED’S board on Monday voted to enter into an agreement with Blair County to allow AMED employees to support a proposed COVID-19 mass vaccination clinic at the Blair County Convention Center.
The memorandum of understanding would allow AMED to be reimbursed for its employees’ time and would provide for liability protection, according to AMED Executive Director Gary Watters.
The county would draft the agreement and AMED solicitor Dan Stants would review and approve it.
Some of the reimbursement money would come from funding provided by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, Watters said.
Numerous agencies and organizations are expected to participate in the clinic including not only emergency medical services, but hospitals, police, the Sheriff’s Department and the Convention Center staff, according to Mark Taylor, director of the Blair County Emergency Management Agency. ....
