Gender-Based Violence/ Equality: WRAHP Sensitise Edo People


BENIN CITY- As part of efforts to enhance protection from gender-based violence, a Non-Governmental Organisation, Women’s Right and Health Project (WRAHP) on Thursday raised the awareness of 30 youths on the provisions of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law(VAPP) 2015.
Speaking at a 3-day Workshop for young people on VAPP law in Benin, Bose Ironsi, Executive Director of WRAHP, said the beneficiaries, who are community representatives, were selected from Egor and Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Areas in Edo State.
Ironsi said that the 12-month project, which was sponsored by Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), would go a long way to empower recipients to act as agents of social change through information sharing and advocacy in their respective communities.

Police nabs human trafficking syndicate, rescues 19 children in Edo

The Edo State Police Command said it has raided a hideout of human traffickers and rescued 19 children and some women.
Spokesman of the command, Kontongs Bello, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday said the women and children were trafficked from Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Anambra and Akwa Ibom State to Evbuotubu in Ekenwan Road axis of Benin City.
According to Bello, the women said they were lured from their various home states by a woman named Jennifer who is currently on the run.
“They were lured in a guise that Edo State Government is giving financial support to single mothers with newborn babies, especially twins.

The Edo State Police Command in collaboration with the vigilante group has rescued 26 victims suspected to have been trafficked from Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Anambra and Akwa Ibom states.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Kontongs Bello, the victims comprise 19 children, one teenager and six women.
He said those rescued were heading towards Evbuotubu in Ekenwan Road axis of Benin City before rescue came their way.
According to the police spokesman, the women were lured from their various home states by a woman named Jennifer (also called Ezinne), noting that the suspect is now on the run.

BENIN CITY – The Edo State Government has commenced recruitment of academic and non-teaching staff for the state’s College of Education, ahead of the college’s reopening.
Permanent Secretary, Edo State Ministry of Education, Mrs. Maris Stella Imasuen, in a statement, reassured the government’s commitment to the training and empowerment of teachers in the state.
She explained that the exercise was in line with the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration’s commitment to sustaining a highly-motivated and professional teaching workforce.
Some non-teaching positions for recruitment include Deputy Registrar, Administrative Officers, Deputy Bursar, Chief Accountant, Account Officers, Director of Works and Nurses.
