'A time for reflection': Edmontonians show support for reconciliation on Canada Day


 
EDMONTON
Edmontonians marked Canada Day but for some, the federal holiday this year was a time for reflection and not celebration.
Thousands swapped their traditional red and white for orange – a colour change to help honour the children who died at residential schools.
After the discoveries of unmarked grave sites at Kamloops and Cowessess, many believed Canada Day should be marked in a different way to be more inclusive of the reality colonialism played.
A convoy procession to raise awareness and honour Indigenous children who never returned home left from Enoch Cree Nation.

UVic political science student Haruun Ali runs for Edmonton City Council –

First-year UVic political science student, Haruun Ali, aims to become Edmonton’s youngest and first ever Black city councillor. At 17 years old, Ali has already begun building his campaign and reaching out to the people in the Edmonton municipal election ward of Ward Papastew, for nomination day on Sept. 20, which will take place just five months after his 18th birthday. 
Having grown up in Edmonton, Ali decided to pursue his degree at UVic because he lacked a course requirement for entry at the University of Alberta. Depending on his election success, Ali plans to transfer back to the U of A after this term. ....
