First on-site oilsands clinic sees more than 1,600 vaccinations

Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. s Horizon site, about 70 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, Alta., includes a surface oilsands mining and bitumen extraction plant, and on-site bitumen upgrading.(CNRL)
As the Wood Buffalo region deals with the highest rate of COVID-19 in the province, Alberta oilsands companies are hosting vaccination clinics to help protect workers.
The first on-site clinic ran from May 2 to 4 at the Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL) Horizon site and saw more than 1,600 contractors and employees vaccinated.
CNRL currently has the largest oilsands outbreak with 482 active cases at the Horizon site, 223 active cases at the Albian site and two at the Jackfish site. There have also been two deaths associated with the outbreak at Horizon. ....

Suncor, CNRL Combine For Earnings Over $2.2B In First Three Months Of 2021

Suncor Energy and Canadian Natural Resources Limited are seeing strong starts to 2021.
Both oil companies released their first-quarter updates this week, highlighting net earnings of $821 million and $1.4 billion respectively.
The two combined for a net loss of $4.7 billion in the first three months of 2020.
“In the first quarter of 2021, we demonstrated our continued commitment to operational excellence through combined upgrader utilization of 97 per cent, record In Situ production, and improved cost performance in the upstream,” said Mark Little, Suncor President, and CEO.
Despite the strong start, Suncor and CNRL continue to be impacted heavily by COVID-19.
There are nine outbreaks at sites run by the two companies. This includes Syncrude‘s Mildred Lake and Aurora sites. ....

Alberta oilsands companies are struggling to contain the spread of COVID-19 among their transient workforces.
As of Monday, Alberta Health reported 12 active outbreaks at work camps and mining sites across the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
A total of 2,054 workers had tested positive, with 738 active cases linked to the latest outbreaks.
The regional municipality declared a state of local emergency on Monday because of climbing COVID-19 cases.

State of emergency in Fort McMurray, Alta. as COVID-19 cases surge

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB), which includes the oilsands hub of Fort McMurray, has declared a local state of emergency as coronavirus cases surge across northern Alberta.
The municipality declared the state of emergency at a special meeting on Sunday evening, which gives the local council more powers to address the pandemic.
Wood Buffalo Mayor Don Scott told CTV News Channel on Tuesday that the emergency order really signals how serious the situation is in the area.
We really need to get a big change in this region because it s totally out of hand. it s just headed in the wrong direction and has been for some period, Scott said. ....
