Liquor licences approved for Auckland bottle stores that had broken labour laws

Clevedon Road Liquor store owner Satnam Singh Jador has been fined $20,000 and ordered to repay $97,361.66 to four employees for a range of breaches, including not paying the minimum wage for all the hours staff were working.
The Labour Inspectorate noted this case had all the hallmarks of exploitation, due to the workers needing the job to retain their visa status.
The Employment Relations Authority ruling is the second in South Auckland this year.
Super Liquor Papatoetoe was ordered to pay close to $50,000 for exploiting a migrant worker in February, while over the last 18 months, Thirsty Liquor East Tamaki was fined $1000 and Thirsty Liquor Wickman Way in Māngere was fined $2000, both for failing to comply with employment laws. ....

Campaigners call for action against bottle shops that flout council regulations

Trevor Wilson is calling for the Auckland Council to take action against bottle stores in South Auckland that continually flout its bylaw with signs advertising liquor in the community.

Wilson is a member of the pressure group Auckland Communities Against Alcohol Harm (CAAH).
The Auckland Council s 2015 signage bylaw controls the signs that can be displayed at shops and other businesses. It limits the number, size, coverage, and placement of them, including window signs and sandwich boards.
While there are different rules for signs in town centres and industrial areas, there is no distinction made for bottle stores and liquor outlets. Something Wilson and CAAH want to see change. ....

Alcohol action group lays complaint over licensing body's chair

An Auckland lawyer s position as a District Licensing Committee (DLC) chairperson has led to a complaint to the Ombudsman due to her previous legal work for clients in the liquor industry.

The DLC is tasked with considering and granting liquor licences for everything from liquor stores and bars to cafes and nightclubs.
Grant Hewison is the secretary of Communities Against Alcohol Harm, a group set up in 2017 to fight back against the growth of liquor outlets and pokie machines in South Auckland.
He said the group filed a complaint with the Ombudsman on Wednesday after failing to convince the Auckland Council last year that Katia Fraser should be removed from the committee. ....

Alcohol action group calls for removal of district liquor licensing committee chairperson

Fraser was contacted for this story, but referred questions to the Auckland Council, which said it did not accept there was an issue of bias, either apparent or actual, on her part.
Hewison said the group thought it had no other option but to take further action after its concerns were rejected by the council.
“Communities Against Alcohol Harm raised concerns about Ms Fraser because she has acted for the alcohol industry. On the basis of that and her reappointment this year we felt it was appropriate to raise it with the Ombudsman.”
He said under section 193 of the Sale of Liquor Act 2012 the council must not appoint a DLC commissioner if it believes that, due to their involvement with the alcohol industry they can’t perform their duties “without actual bias or the appearance of bias”. ....
