Ballina's Cr Cadwallader won't let Dunoon Dam go – The Echo

The Dunoon Dam made an unscheduled appearance late in the last Ballina Shire Council meeting, on the back of a motion put forward by Cr Phillip Meehan and seconded by Cr Sharon Cadwallader.
Cr Meehan said he had growing concerns about Rous County Council’s plan to purchase the Marom Creek Water Treatment Plant and the associated water licences from Ballina as part of the Future Water Strategy. He also said he was alarmed about Rous’s plans for the Alstonville aquifers.
‘This is another example of water mining except the water’s not being put into bottles,’ he said. ‘But there’s a whole lot of public concern about it… We actually need to consider whether we want to move ahead with this or not.’ ....

There s more than one reason the debate over the Dunoon dam and future water resources runs deep.
It s why the dam gets ping ponged between councils across the Northern Rivers and back to Rous County Council for another look.
Everyone knows there is going to be winners and losers if a dam is chosen over aquifers and vice versa.
Maybe neither of them is the right option.
It s also looking like a turf war between Lismore and Ballina over which town is top dog in the region.
Dunoon is in Lismore s patch and aquifers on the Alstonville plateau largely bring the heat on Ballina Shire Council. ....

Dunoon Dam ditched by Rous County Council – Echonetdaily

With numbers locked yesterday, the Chair of Rous County Council (RCC), Keith Williams, voted to prevent the contentious Dunoon Dam project proceeding, at a not-so ordinary Rous meeting in Lismore.
The meeting began with deputations against the dam from Duncan Dey, Bianca Urbana and Cindy Roberts, who was representing the Widjabul Wyabul traditional owners of the affected area, between Dunoon and The Channon.
Ms Roberts said, ‘As we gather together, and acknowledge Nguthunggali Ngadjanggali our creator, I welcome all my ancestors into this meeting today.
‘In regard to this proposal, from 1995 up until 2020 Rous was consulting with individuals alone, she said. ‘And some of those people were not the right people of the land to even be at the table having this discussion. ....
