A National Science Policy and Strategy aimed at enhancing the development of science and technology in Ethiopia has been launched recently. As a national framework, the Ethiopian Ministry of Science and Higher Education’s policy acknowledges the role of science and technology in responding to the emerging needs of the country.
In general, it also recognises the importance of science and technology in ensuring Ethiopia’s future growth but, in particular, its ambition of becoming a middle-income country by 2025.
Past efforts

Despite the critical importance it holds, the development of a nationwide, well-coordinated long-term digital plan is a rarity in many countries, especially in Africa. In Ethiopia, this is no longer the case following the Ethiopian Ministry of Science and Higher Education’s launch of the Digital Skills Country Action Plan 2030 for higher education and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions.
This new development follows on the national Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy that seeks to align digital transformation with the country’s desire to create ‘decent’ and productive jobs, promote growth that could address poverty and harness the competitive advantages that new digital technologies can offer in economic growth and development. ....
