Defense Forces military band budget to be halved

The Estonian Defense Forces (EDF) military band is to have its annual budget cut in half, with the bulk of its workforce – which itself will be downsized – to work part-time rather than full-time. The announcement follows speculation about the orchestra s future after removing it altogether or placing it under another authority was suggested as an austerity measure.
The EDF military band will be placed under the auspices of the Estonian war museum (Eesti sõjamuuseum), ERR reports.
War museum director Hellar Lill said that there would be: A structural change in the way we create the EDF orchestra, or the name isn t quite certain yet, department. ....

Government to slow down defense development

Estonia is set to slash planned defense spending by more than €100 million compared to the current Defense Forces development plan and the previous state budget strategy (RES). Total defense spending will remain above 2 percent of GDP.
Defense spending will be reduced by €114 million compared to the current Defense Forces development plan and defense investments program (KIP), Minister of Defense Kalle Laanet (Reform) said at a press conference on Tuesday. While the 2022 defense budget is bigger by €59.4 million compared to this year s, it falls €16.6 million short of what was prescribed in the previous government s fiscal strategy. The gap between recent plans and the new RES will grow in future years. ....

Rector: Band part of every country's military culture and tradition

Rector of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theater Ivari Ilja said that retaining the Band of the Estonian Defense Forces is important as it carries an important part of military culture and tradition. It is also vital to maintain musicians jobs as their disappearance would disadvantage professional musical culture in Estonia, Ilja said on the Esimene stuudio talk show.
Ilja said that a band is a traditional part of almost every country s defense force. It would be very unfortunate were Estonia to become an exception to that rule, he remarked.
On the one hand, it is part of our professional music and military culture, and (EDF Commander) Lt. Gen. Herem said in an interview that the EDF budget is meant for ensuring the state s defensive capacity and not promoting brass-band music or financing Estonian music culture. ....

Former EDF commander recommends loan instead of cuts in national defense

Former Estonian Defense Forces (EDF) commander and current MEP Riho Terras (Isamaa) said that in the current critical security situation, the state should increase the defense budget instead of making any cuts and that one of the options could be a loan.
In my assessment, cuts in the defense sector should not be made in this moment. The international situation is so critical and intense. Cuts in defense send the wrong message and weaken Estonia s defense capabilities, Terras told ERR.
And if it is urgent then I do not see these cuts, since the EDF has focused on producing actual capabilities over the last few years and has tried to reduce all costs to a minimum. There is no more to take, he added. ....
