Maushardt saluted for half-century of service to Freehold Fire Department FREEHOLD – A veteran member of the Freehold Fire Department in Freehold Borough has been recognized by municipal officials and his fellow firefighters for his half-century of service to the volunteer organization. William Maushardt, who joined the Freehold Fire Department’s Good Will Hook and Ladder Company in 1970, was presented with a resolution in his honor by his fellow firefighters on May 31. The resolution was passed by the Borough Council in December, but council members were unable to deliver the document to Maushardt due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Here’s the rubble that remains after this week’s demolition of the old Broome Street fire house. Crews took down the 1937 building to make room for Essex Crossing, the large residential and commercial project coming to the former Seward Park urban renewal site. Next up: demolition of two Grand Street tenements. The development team says they hope to begin work on a new 15 story building here, including new rental apartments, a large grocery store and other commercial businesses, by late June or early July. The parcel will also include a public park and a site for a potential public school. The building was the former home of Engine Company 17 and Hook & Ladder Company 18 until 1973. It was used in recent years by a movie props business.
