Some stakeholders in the South–East of Nigeria have blamed environmental pollution in some parts of the country for a low life expectancy of Nigerians, a survey by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has revealed.
An environmentalist and university lecturer, Professor Mike Abaribe of Imo State University, noted that residents of communities with a high level of oil spillage were exposed to an early death.
Abaribe said that besides low life expectancy, agricultural activities would be adversely affected in any area with high level of oil spillage. ....

Enugu gov vows to deal with land speculators defacing natural heritage

Disturbed by the high rate of destruction of natural heritage in Enugu metropolis and its environs, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on Wednesday vowed to deal ruthlessly with land speculators defacing the natural environment in the state.
Speaking through his Commissioner for Information, Chidi Aroh, the governor said that the destruction of natural vegetation could create disaster in the state capital through erosion.
While inspecting the level of destruction done at Miliken Hill, Aria Road Hill and Iva Valley Hill behind Revival City Church, the Information Commissioner told journalists who accompanied him that Enugu State Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources had last week warned individuals, communities and authorities that are involved in the ongoing destruction of the Miliken hills’ natural heritage, especially behind the new Enugu State Infectious Disease Hospital, formerly known as Colliery Hospital Enugu and other hills in the state, to desist from f ....

The Enugu State Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources has warned individuals, communities and authorities that are involved in the ongoing destruction of the Miliken hills’ natural heritage, especially behind the new Enugu State Infectious Disease Hospital, formerly known as Colliery Hospital Enugu, and other hills in the state, to desist from further plotting, allocating and destruction of the state’s natural heritage.
The warning was contained in a statement by the Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Chijioke Edeoga, who stressed that “failure to adhere to this warning will attract severe action of the state government”. ....
