A GRAPHIC illustration of the amount of litter on beaches was highlighted when a Beach Patrol event at Mount Martha collected 151 kilograms in one hour.
“After many months of no organised clean ups due to COVID-19, it was fantastic to have about 100 volunteers come out for a morning of beach litter blitz, craft, a talk by Dolphin Research Institute and lots of great prizes from local businesses,” Waste Wise Mornington Peninsula’s Birte Molier said.
A feature of the event was a mini-container deposit scheme which prompted Boomerang Alliance to ask people to write to their MPs to push the case for a scheme that works because “we can’t do litter cleans forever.” ....

Rolling out beach access this summer
Beach matting has been rolled out at Mount Martha this summer as part of Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Disability Inclusion Plan, thanks to our partnership with Mount Martha Life Saving Club.
Beach matting offers people in wheelchairs or with limited mobility the chance to get across the sand to the water’s edge. The matting is available at Mount Martha beach daily and two MobiChairs are available on weekends until Easter Monday 5 April 2021.
Higher than usual tides have meant the matting at Mills Beach, Mornington is no longer safe to have out, however a MobiChair beach wheelchair will still be available on weekends during patrol hours in partnership with the Mornington Life Saving Club allowing access to the beach and shallow water. ....
