Cyberbullying incidents 'soar' during pandemic, Oireachtas committee hears

Cyberbullying incidents have “soared in number” during the pandemic, leaving children “only a click away from distress”, an Oireachtas Committee meeting on the mental health impacts of school bullying has heard.
Bullying in schools has become more difficult to monitor and intervene on due to the “ever increasing catalogue of ways bullying can occur”.
Damian White, President of the Irish Primary Principals Network told the Joint Committee on Education that bullying has a “severe impact” on victims, as well as their friends and family who witness the bullying.
“If unchecked, it can have a devastating effect on those involved and on school morale in general. It can lead to social isolation, stress, depression and suicide,” he said. ....

When the children returned to school last September I dared to dream, for the short while I was allowed, that homework might be a thing of the past. Our afternoons and evenings were our own, the kids were more content going to school in spite of all the necessary changes, and things were certainly less fractious around the dining-room table. Had the pandemic finally seen off the one thing that many parents had longed to see the back of for years?  ....

Huge sigh of relief as almost 340,000 pupils return to school, but impact on Covid cases to be measured before full reopening

It wasn’t the first day of the school year, but it felt like it as pupils’ reconnected with their friends and teachers, who stood in front of a class for the first time in more than two months.
At the 430-pupil Mary Mother of Hope Junior National School in Castaheany, west Dublin, the rich diversity of its pupil population was evident in children bearing bunches of flowers, honouring the Eastern European custom of presenting a bouquet to teacher on the first day of the school year.
If floral traditions relatively new to Irish education brought smiles, the familiar habit of parents lingering for a chat at the school gate was taboo – and it doesn’t appear to have been a problem. The message from everyone from Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn to school principals was for parents to ‘drop and dash’ or to ‘pick up and push on’. ....
