Victoria Young The Concord City Council Chambers were somber Thursday evening as Concord Police  Chief Gary Gacek presented the Medal of Valor and Purple Heart awards. In honor of National Police Week, Gacek presented the Medal of Valor award and Purple Heart award to Haylee Shuping, on behalf of her husband, Officer Jason Shuping. Shuping died after being shot while responding to a report of a crash December 16, 2020. Officer Kaleb Robinson, Shuping s partner was also shot and wounded during the incident and is said to have shielded Shuping with his body once Shuping was down. At the presentation Thursday evening, other city officials, county officials, private business and other law enforcement officers were recognized for their actions and support of Concord Police Department following the death of Jason Shuping. ....
From Staff Reports To honor the life of Concord Police Officer Jason Shuping, the Concord City Council recently approved a $100,000 budget amendment to fund a new Fallen Officer Memorial. The city also filed necessary state and federal paperwork to establish a new nonprofit, Concord Police Foundation, to assist officers who are injured or killed in the line of duty and their families. On Dec. 16, 2020, Shuping was killed in the line of duty while responding to a call about a crash and possible vehicle theft. Officer Kaleb Robinson was also injured while responding to the same call. Shuping was with the Concord Police Department for 1½ years before making the ultimate sacrifice in service to his community.
