Building an inclusive, networked UN Jun 27,2021 - Last updated at Jun 27,2021 By María Fernanda Espinosa and Danilo Türk QUITO/MADRID Great-power competition, the troubling rise of xenophobic nationalism, existential environmental threats, and the ongoing COVID-19 onslaught present major global governance challenges. Against this backdrop, world leaders have tasked United Nations Secretary General António Guterres with recommending steps to advance the far-reaching commitments contained in last year’s so-called UN75 Declaration, in which the General Assembly pledged to ensure “the future we want”. The secretary general’s much-anticipated report, Our Common Agenda, is due this September, and it would benefit from a follow-through vehicle to weigh the report’s recommendations and deliberate on and adopt his best ideas. We therefore support the proposal for a World Summit on Inclusive Global Governance involving a wide range of participants. ....

Share on email The Stimson Center, together with the Coalition for the UN We Need, Together First, and Club de Madrid organised an expert’s roundtable to support efforts to advance the UN75 Declaration’s implementation. This is part of a series of six events, and this particular session focussed on the Declaration’s commitments #3 “We will promote peace and prevent conflicts” and #4 “We will abide by international law and ensure justice”. The online session took place on 15 April 2021. The panellists were led by Mr Danilo Turk, former President of Slovenia and President of Club de Madrid; Dr Vasu Gounden Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD and Mr Joris Larik, Senior Advisor at the Stimson Center. ....
