Delta last week released a strong set of results for the full year to March 2021 despite operating in an environment that was characterised by restrictions to social and economic activity implemented by authorities in response to the advent of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
Delta largely makes more sales when people are free to go about their social and economic activities.
During the period under review, at least five months (March to May 2020 and January to February 2021) were under high lockdown levels.
In addition to reduced business activity arising from the Covid-19 lock downs, the operating environment was characterised by depreciation of the local currency and prevalence of multiple exchange rates, and hyperinflation which eroded consumer disposable incomes. ....

Zimbabwe’s largest alcoholic beverage maker, Delta Corporation Limited (Delta) anticipates a subdued business outturn from its regional markets during the fourth quarter (Q4) due to tighter lockdown restrictions imposed by the government at the beginning of the year amid worsening COVID-19 infection figures.
The Group, which has units in South Africa and Zambia posted notable declines in volumes during the third quarter due to the impact of COVID-19 and the trend is expected to continue following stricter measures on movements following the discovery of a new COVID-19 variant.
“The authorities in regional markets invoked heightened levels of lockdowns in January 2021 in response to the upsurge in COVID-19 infections and emergence of more virulent strains,” ....

Delta lager volumes up 48%

Delta Corporation reported a buoyant Christmas quarter with the key lager beer volumes rising 48% against the comparable year ago period, due to positives arising from the payment of end of year bonuses and increased mining activity and infrastructure projects which injected liquidity onto the market. This comes in a year characterised by slowdown in economic activity due to a pandemic and associated lockdowns.
With the end of year comes an increase in social functions, holiday parties and dinners out, which inevitably leads to more alcohol consumption for most adults.
For the nine months to December volumes were up 20% impacted mainly by the lockdown in the first half. ....
