IMPHAL: A tribal body in Manipur opposed the burial of academician Nehginpao Kipgen who died of COVID- 19, stating that he was not indigenous to the state.
Nehginpao, 46, headed the Centre of South East Asian Studies at OP Jindal University in Hyderabad.
He died on May 2 at AIIMS-Delhi while undergoing treatment for COVID-19.
In a statement, the United Naga Council (UNC) demanded the legal ground for the burial of Nehginpao at Kangpokpi. ....

Imphal, May 7 (PTI) A tribal body in Manipur opposed the burial of academician Nehginpao Kipgen who died of COVID- 19, stating that he was not indigenous to the state.
Nehginpao, 46, headed the Centre of South East Asian Studies at OP Jindal University in Hyderabad. He died on May 2 at AIIMS-Delhi while undergoing treatment for COVID-19.
In a statement, the United Naga Council (UNC) demanded the legal ground for the burial of Nehginpao at Kangpokpi.
It said that the burial of a foreigner will set a bad precedent, while also questioning how he got Indian citizenship. ....

A Manipur-based group has opposed the burial of a COVID-19 victim who taught in a Haryana university but was born in adjoining Myanmar.
The United Naga Council (UNC) mourned the death of 42-year-old Nehginpao Kipgen at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi on May 2, but questioned his citizenship and the “legal ground” for the burial of his body in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district.
The UNC said Dr. Kipgen, who headed the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies at the OP Jindal University, was not an ‘indigenous’ to Manipur and asked if he had acquired Indian citizenship under due procedure. ....

GUWAHATI: A tribal organisation in Manipur opposed the burial of a Covid-19 victim questioning his citizenship but, eventually, the last rites were performed under the watchful eyes of the administration.
Dr Nehginpao Kipgen (42), who headed the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies at the OP Jindal University in Haryana, died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi on May 2 and the body was brought to Manipur for burial in Kangpokpi district.
The United Naga Council (UNC) had mourned the demise but raised questions on Dr Kipgen s citizenship, stating that he was not an indigenous citizen of Manipur. ....
